Just down from the road from Mission Espiritu Santo de Zuniga is the presidio that protected the entire area and was the presidio that General Fannin and his men were returned to after being captured down the road (at the Fannin Battleground). Today, it's known as Presidio la Bahia or simply Goliad.
The importance of Goliad is similar to the Alamo, it was used to rally Texians and demonstrated the ruthlessness of General Santa Anna.
Unfortunately, the presidio or fort was closed due to electrical problems. We did walk around it and were able to peek in through the gun/cannon holes. This was another location we visited in the middle of the afternoon to avoid the mosquitoes. The electrical was fixed the next morning, but we decided to avoid the mosquitoes and save the inside for another trip.
The presidio has some pretty architecture features, but it is definitely more plain than the missions.
