Hello 2016

The last few months of 2015 were a busy few...... A  joined the robotics teams with one of the local homeschool groups.  The team spent the fall semester learning how to program in RobotC, how to program a virtual robot to pickup blocks, move trees, identify colors, put out virtual fires, and rescue "people".   They also built a robot using Vex and Hexbug products.  The competition challenge this year is to play basketball.  There are balls located on a ramp and around the playing field board.  The objective is to get the balls into either the goal for 3 points or over the scoring line for 1 point.  The team wanted to build a launching robot so they designed and built a catapult robot with a scoop.  Also included in the actual building and programming of the robot is record keeping  and documentation of what the team has done. The team finally finished their robot late in December and we had our first competition just before Christmas. ...

An F

Everyone has had to endure it and everyone has gotten one.  Yes, my children do receive F's.  Usually, they are given in Kindergarten and they are given for not doing their work or participating.  What happens when an F is given?  We have a fun day or evening.  We watch the favorite movie or TV show of the F recipient, we have extra time for outdoor playing and sometimes we even get field trips to the park.  What does the F recipient do?  At the park, they get to sit next to mama and watch with longing eyes as the others play.  At home, they get to sit in their rooms and contemplate the decision to argue and fuss and refuse to do their school work while we watch their favorite movie and sometimes even eat their favorite dessert.  Often, the day after the F is spent in washing pillows that have been tear soaked.  However, the F a most useful tool and the days and weeks after it is given are just about blissful!

What! It's already Fall?

Wow!  What a summer we've had!  We started off with swim lessons and headed into an awesome VBS talking about some of the miracles of God and Jesus.  The kids spent the week being "God Scene Investigators". Then, the flood waters opened....... We found a big house - 2800 sq ft - on about 7 acres on the good side of the light pollution spectrum, meaning DFW and Greenville are grouped into one big light mass instead of having Greenville on one side of the sky and Dallas on the other.  It was a foreclosure IN GOOD SHAPE!!  All the appliances were still in it, the HVAC was there and working.  The only think missing was cabinet doors/draw fronts and bedroom doors. So..... we spent the last few days of VBS and all of July working out the details on buying this house.  There was, of course, the financing and then the determining of the correct address - because the listing address was one thing, the tax record listed another, and the 911 system had anot...

LTC and another birthday

Did you know that it's been 6 years since Easter was this early?  It's one of those rare facts that I will recall forever because 6 years ago Z was born. Easter weekend also means LTC - Leadership Training for Christ.  This year the theme was "Going the Extra Mile" and the Bible bowl book was Matthew.   Because Z's birthday was on Friday, we elected to have our family party after LTC.  He did however get a birthday lunch at McDonald's.  He also got to spend his birthday evening watching movies and eating lots of not good for you snacks (you know all that sugar stuff that I try to avoid normally) and sleeping in a nice hotel with lots of soft pillows. We have 2 LTC participants and one "tag-a-long".  The tag-a-long is the child who is in either 1st or 2nd grade.  They are too young to officially participate but Mama requires that they unofficially take the Bible bowl tests.  So they sit in the audience with me while the younger ones are upst...

Skippy

We have spent the last 3 months trying to get an aquarium setup and running correctly.  We cleaned up our tank and got all new gravel and decor and a new filter, but not a new pump.  We even added a bubble bar for dramatic effects.  We let it run for a month and thought it was good.  We went over to PetsMart to get our fish because our local WM was caught doing their weekly inventory of fish - it involved taking each fish out of the tank and putting them in a small container and the putting them back again.  No wonder there are so many dead fish in their tanks! Aquarium with 1 Mollie Anyway, we talked with the PetsMart fish lady and told her about our tank and how long it had been up and she said yes, we could get 6 small fish - no problem.  Well, we had a problem.  One fish died and so we drove back over to PetsMart (a 30 mile trip) and replaced the fish.  However, they refused to check our water because it had the dead fish in it.  2 ...
