After a very exhausting trip to the star party, we came home at a relaxing summer!  We spent the summer swimming and relaxing and just enjoying our time off! And then I woke up......... The summer started off great.  We had our normal activities of VBS and history camp at the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum.  Unfortunately, the youth orchestra didn't happen this year - which may actually have been a blessing for me.  There was a few make up piano lessons and violin lessons.  We joined the local country club for their summer membership and spent several days (because the rain had different ideas) playing at the pool. The reason for our trips out west?  The Texas Star Party .  This was our 6th visit to the star party.  I've decided that I like the later May ones because it's slightly warmer at night than April and the days aren't as hot as in June. We've had several RV spots over the years.  We've settled on spot 6 as our favorite because it's on the same side of the road as the lower observing field which means there aren't any rocks/roads to cross in the middle of the night (driving on the ranch at night isn't allowed, the roads are still rock and hard to walk on after dark) and the kids can just walk a straight line from the RV to the telescopes. During the day, there is a picnic area that the kids like to use as their play area.  It is across the road from the RV but that wouldn't change if we were in another spot. McDonald Observatory - what trip out to the Davis Mountains would be complete without a visit to the observatory?  The tour start with a viewing of the sun view their indoor conference room and a solar telescope.  This year, we were able to view a small flare LIVE!!!  Very cool! This year marked the first time C was interested in the tour and that N  could enjoy the discovery area!      "Hey Z , does moving while holding the controls make the telescope and the floor move faster?"   Z  was allowed to move the floor up and down and the return the telescope and dome to rest position. A and C  were given the opportunity to turn the dome and the telescope into what could be called the starting position for a nights observing.
