What do you do when the power goes out?  This past weekend, the power went out at our house, and at about 5000 other peoples too.  It stayed off for roughly 41 hours or about 2 days.  The initial cause of our power outage, a big arctic storm moved into our area.  The final cause of our power outage, downed power lines resulting from iced trees falling on them. So, what happens when the power goes out in an all electric house? Your curl up in blankets and with buddies: You can guard your house against all the ice cracking noises: You put the broken fireplace panels in your fireplace anyway to cover the hole back there and build a fire (just wait for the house update on the living room to hear about the fireplace panels); After you haul in the wood and let it dry because you didn't expect to have to burn a fire until the fireplace was fixed.  You can wrap up in jackets, whether they are yours or not, anything you find that fits is fair ...

The month of November is when people generally post their thankfulness lists daily on facebook.  This year, I decided to post mine here because later I can print this list and remember what November 2013 was like.  For those who don't know, I periodically go through my blog and print everything off before a certain time, usually I leave the last year up.  Then, I put the printouts in a folder marked for school progress reports. Our house is still a little crazy.  We've sort of gotten into a morning schedule of school work; the afternoons are iffy.  There is still lots and lots of house things to be done.  With Thanksgiving next week and then the Christmas holidays, it might be nice to take a break from IEW, which Mama has been working hard at keeping on track with, and just write to have fun.  Here are some great ideas for a Christmas journal. 25 Days of Christmas Journal Writing

November 4 is going to be always remembered as a landmark day in our little world.  It was 5 years ago that the course of our nation changed.  And it was the date that my maternal grandfather, Leo Margerum, passed away. At graduation (high school I'm assuming) and in the Navy With the family - Uncle Leo (sure does look like my brother and nephew), my Mom, and Aunt Janet is the baby. And now, November 4 will also be remembered as the day my father-in-law, Kenneth Kerr, passed away, after several years of fighting emphysema. We've had a problem at our new house with mice.  I killed one not long after we moved in.  At that point, we hurriedly moved our tomcat Tux to our new house.  We had intended to wait until the fence was up and ready for the dogs, but a mouse in the house changes the mind quickly! We kept Tux in the house for about a week, all that he could stand.  And since then, he has been almost nightly bringing us presents of rats and mice. Tux is also 10 years old - not exactly a young man.  So, when a friend said they were having kittens, we volunteered to get one because 1)Tux is old and 2) we were looking for an indoor/outdoor cat as well.  Tux doesn't do inside real well, although as he ages, he is more willing to stay inside. Almost 2 weeks ago, we picked up our little kitten.  We requested, if possible, to get a little girl thinking it would make the acceptance of Tux easier to acquire.  We finally decided on a name Minnie Molly Mouser.  W...

In the midst of all this house remodeling/painting/organizing - have we gotten back to school?  Yes, we finally started back to school the last week of September.  After our trial 1st day of school in mid-September, we spent the next 2 weeks unpacking and organizing more.  During that time, we found all the school books and math manipulatives and math CD's.  We found the Latin discs and the writing discs and the girls found all their writing notebooks and spelling notebooks so everyone would know where to start.  We also found a home for all the school books/notebooks/etc. So what does this year look like for us?  We have a 7th, a 5th, a 3rd, and a 1st grader. Wow!  What a summer we've had!  We started off with swim lessons and headed into an awesome VBS talking about some of the miracles of God and Jesus.  The kids spent the week being "God Scene Investigators". Then, the flood waters opened....... We found a big house - 2800 sq ft - on about 7 acres on the good side of the light pollution spectrum, meaning DFW and Greenville are grouped into one big light mass instead of having Greenville on one side of the sky and Dallas on the other.  It was a foreclosure IN GOOD SHAPE!!  All the appliances were still in it, the HVAC was there and working.  The only think missing was cabinet doors/draw fronts and bedroom doors. So..... we spent the last few days of VBS and all of July working out the details on buying this house.  There was, of course, the financing and then the determining of the correct address - because the listing address was one thing, the tax record listed another, and the 911 system had anot...

Craig is returning to school for a masters degree in engineering.  Because of this, we don't have many free weekends to travel (did you notice no Star Party post this year?).  So, when Craig finished his project work early, we took advantage of the Memorial Holiday to visit with my parents. This trip, the kids were able to visit with the horses and cousins and to get a few things from Nonie's house. First we visited with the new horse and everyone petted Classy - my horse when I was younger. Then, we played with cousins out front and chased Sadie, Grammie's dog around the yard.  Mamaw's yard includes a climbing thing and a wooden truck and a sandbox.  Lots of fun to be had by all. Then we visited the horses again.  This time, the brushes were gotten out and everyone groomed a horse or pony.  N even got to sit on a few of them.  The pony was OK, the bigger ones were scary!!
