In my life this week...

It's been 2 weeks since my last journal update.  It's been a crazy two weeks.  We had
2 birthdays and an ER visit.   This immediate past week, the weather was cooler - perfect for staying inside!  Overall, a crazy 2 weeks.  We started out the 2 weeks with a Saturday dinner in the next town for my birthday and, of course, a visit to Hobby Lobby!  Then, we had a fairly normal week; just busy with school.  On the next Saturday, we spent the day cleaning up the yard and Craig worked some more on the playhouse.  Sunday was the changing point - and we didn't go anywhere, except the dr's and piano lessons.  We did spent this past Saturday at the nearest 1st Monday Trade Days.  We found a great book on military planes for a quarter and 1/2 of us got a little bit of sun.  The rest inherited my great-grandfather's skin type - tan and tan and tan in the sun!

In our homeschool this week...

The 1st week, things were pretty normal.  S has started memorizing some music for Piano Guild.  All other subjects are progressing on schedule.  The 2nd week, we didn't get too much school work done because C is recovering and H has a fever and cough.  We've watched several movies and S has been practicing her piano.  I took advantage of the week to clean up a little bit more and to research some options for the coming years.  S was able to work a little on her sculptures for LTC.  She has some great ideas and will spend this week finalizing so it will have time to dry.

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

Places we're going - how about the ER because C cut her forehead on the car door and then back to the dr for a followup and then again to the dr for Z's well checkup.  I think we spent the week visiting with Dr. Patterson!  We also went back to the library after almost a year away.  We needed to waste some time while we had a showing and the library fit the bill.  It was great - we've found some books to fill the void from some in storage and the girls have found some new things to read.  We had a trip to the children's museum scheduled; that'll wait until everyone is feeling better.


My favorite thing this week was...

Dinner, with well behaved children, who thought it was so cool that they were allowed to throw the peanuts on the floor! and the most wonderful husband in the world.

And watching a very happy boy see his spiderman/train cake come to life.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

Even though S is only 4th grade, I realized this week that in the daily task of homeschooling, we can use the philosophy of "take each year, one at a time".  However, if you use that philosophy for the entire career - you're probably going to miss a few things that are required for college.  When the time comes, my children will be allowed to not go, if they so choose.  However, it is my responsibility to make sure they are ready for a top tier university, so they can exercise that option too.

So, in my down time this week, I created a tenative plan for all of the kids school career.  I'm happy for the most part with where we are headed.  I looked up the requirements for entrance to Texas A&M and I think we are headed toward meeting them.  I do still need to find good, strong upper level math courses and decide what foreign language program to use.  All the other subjects, we are going at a great pace to complete as required/recommended.  It's a great feeling to know we are headed in the right direction. 

There still will be changes as we go, but having a tenative plan will keep us on tract for a successful academic career.  And provide me with a list of things to buy so when I find them on sale or at Half Priced Books, I can take advantage of the savings.

Texas History Tour - Texas Independence - Washington on the Brazos

 Because of all the construction on I35, it was recommended to us to travel across Central TX and use I45 instead.  So, on our trip down to San Antonio, we went north of College Station.  We decided on the way home, to go south of BCS and stop at one last history spot - Washington on the Brazos, where Texas Independence was declared.  (It's was also a nice distance from Goliad and a great stopping point for lunch) The original monument next to Independence Hall This state historic site also incorporates the etched windows.  Probably because of all the trees, these etched windows are easier to see.  We walked down the side streets of town and went down to the Brazos River.  There were lots of pretty flowers and some wild grapes along the trail. Texas History Tour - Spanish influence - Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo

 After a late lunch, we decided to visit the middle mission - San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo .  It was the largest mission and the one that is most well preserved, being designed a work area for the WPA in the 1930's.  They have done a wonderful job of recreating ruins and painting original colors.  There were also some architecture dig sites this summer.  Unfortunately, being a Sunday, we didn't get to meet any of the student workers.  We did however, get to visit with the park rangers, who had just recently returned to work and the park store was open as well. Mission San Jose was founded in 1720 along the San Antonio River.  It came to be the largest mission on the area with roughly 300 Indians living on the grounds.   "it's a giant turtle with a hole in the back" It's really an outdoor oven. Weekly Journal - week 4

In my life this week... It's been a different sort of a week.  The weather has been nice and so we've spent alot of time outside and with the windows open.  It's also been a week of reprimands.  Everything this week has set someone off - be it birthday parties, homeschooling, weight loss, diabetes, vacation plans, job choices and locations, attending worship services, or disciplining our children.  What has been accomplished this week?  The car is now in tip top shape again.  Craig changed all the spark plugs several months ago and our check engine light kept coming back.  Finally visited the dealer and they fixed it with a $2.00 part.  I was very afraid it was going to be so much more.  We also have 2 new tires on the the front.  Now, just need that oil change and we'll be good to go for our next adventure!
