2012/2013 Schedule

Last week was our 1st week of the 2012/2013 school year. This year, we have students in 6th, 4th, 2nd, and K.

What subjects are we covering this year?

Bible - Devo, LTC - Matthew, Proverbs 31, and Bible Study Guide for All Ages, volume 2
History - The Mystery of History
Science - Apologia Botany (finishing up) and Zoology, Astronomy - an ongoing project for us
Handwriting and Typing - Bible verses, alphabet, hymns
Drawing - See the Light Art Lessons
Music Appreciation - professional records of songs being learned on the piano, violin, and guitar
Art Appreciation - Portrait America
PE - Tennis, Workout for Kids, Wii active games, Football
Latin - Visual Latin 1
Literature - A Little Princess, Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, and who knows what else we might read.
Writing - IEW
Phonics - the Alphabet and The Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading
Spelling - Phonetic Zoo
Grammar - Analytical Grammar Jr.
Math - Teaching Textbooks
Home Economics - Gracious Girls, Character Training, Sewing, Crafts, Cooking

How did our 1st week go? I'd have to say very crazy!!!! We spent Monday (a holiday for Craig so a holiday for us too) visiting Grandpa Kerr in the hospital and the kids and I visited with family friends in the same town. We also spent Sunday at the hospital and the waiting room got old very very quickly! And, being a holiday weekend, the gift shop was closed, the non-patient cafe' was closed, etc. Our sanity was saved by our wonderful friends and their front yard which is perfect for running off energy.

Tuesday got off to a late start. We went to 4/5 school time at the local library. That went well. I think we'll continue this program - it fits with Z's learning style. Wednesday, we went to a new program at the library for 0-3's. It was suppose to have different activities than story time. However, H was the oldest child there and the activities weren't suited for a 3 almost 4 year old. N enjoyed the ball toss though. Afterwards, we waited around until regular storytime. By the end of storytime, N was pretty tired and upset. I think we'll only be attending storytime on Wednesday's. It's just too long of a morning for a little one.

By the end of the week, we were getting up on time and managed to touch on all subjects during the week; some were only to organize our folders and review. We are all set for a full week of school this week!

Texas History Tour - Texas Independence - Washington on the Brazos

Because of all the construction on I35, it was recommended to us to travel across Central TX and use I45 instead. So, on our trip down to San Antonio, we went north of College Station. We decided on the way home, to go south of BCS and stop at one last history spot - Washington on the Brazos, where Texas Independence was declared. (It's was also a nice distance from Goliad and a great stopping point for lunch) The original monument next to Independence Hall This state historic site also incorporates the etched windows. Probably because of all the trees, these etched windows are easier to see. We walked down the side streets of town and went down to the Brazos River. There were lots of pretty flowers and some wild grapes along the trail. Texas History Tour - Spanish influence - Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo

After a late lunch, we decided to visit the middle mission - San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo . It was the largest mission and the one that is most well preserved, being designed a work area for the WPA in the 1930's. They have done a wonderful job of recreating ruins and painting original colors. There were also some architecture dig sites this summer. Unfortunately, being a Sunday, we didn't get to meet any of the student workers. We did however, get to visit with the park rangers, who had just recently returned to work and the park store was open as well. Mission San Jose was founded in 1720 along the San Antonio River. It came to be the largest mission on the area with roughly 300 Indians living on the grounds. "it's a giant turtle with a hole in the back" It's really an outdoor oven. Weekly Journal - week 4

In my life this week... It's been a different sort of a week. The weather has been nice and so we've spent alot of time outside and with the windows open. It's also been a week of reprimands. Everything this week has set someone off - be it birthday parties, homeschooling, weight loss, diabetes, vacation plans, job choices and locations, attending worship services, or disciplining our children. What has been accomplished this week? The car is now in tip top shape again. Craig changed all the spark plugs several months ago and our check engine light kept coming back. Finally visited the dealer and they fixed it with a $2.00 part. I was very afraid it was going to be so much more. We also have 2 new tires on the the front. Now, just need that oil change and we'll be good to go for our next adventure! In our homeschool this week... This week has been a sort of Spring Break. With it being the 1st nice all week ...
