Spring Break

This week is public school Spring Break.  We didn't intend to take a break this week as we will soon be attending the http://texasstarparty.org/.  However, there was 1 thing which had to be taken care of before next Monday. This is what we've learned in our quest to complete this 1 task.......

  1. The drivers license office in Rockwall is terrible and has a line of 3 to 4 people out the door at all times.  
  2. The Garland DMV is horrific!! The line here was to the end of a 30 row parking lot.  
  3. The DMV in Sulphur Springs would be awesome, if it were open this week. 
  4. And the office in Bonham is the only one which keeps it's website up to date.

What else have we learned?

  • N is about as fond of taking pictures as A is
  • JCPenney Portraits is still awesome!!
  • That N doesn't care for the huge fish which are bigger than him at Bass Pro; 
  • that Z LOVES boats and would have spent all day looking them over; 
  • JoAnn Fabrics carries some beautiful starry fabric perfect for sketch bags but nothing in planets for Hawaiian shirt day; 
  • that the pattern drawers at Hobby Lobby have been utilized so much that they are falling apart and require the assistant of the strong male workers to open; 
  • that the talking skeleton at the Dairy Museum is still very cool, as is the ice cream!; 
  • that falling into the lake isn't cool when it happens but sure makes a fun story to tell and replay the next day; 
  • that it's very very smart to have friends whose son wears the same size as yours and lives close to said lake; 
  • that Brookshires hires some great people!; 
  • that the next time my sewing machine needs to be serviced, I need to remember to bring some kind of rolling cart because our new van is too big to drive down Main Street in Sulphur Springs, must less park along the street;
  • the Fannin County Museum is pretty neat - there is a restored WWII plane and a very old firetruck
  • Fannin County Museum has some great volunteers
  • taking a field trip to the building where Grandpa use to work is just fun!
  • that building a fence is hard work and lots of fun with great friends
  • C is allergic to poison ivy

Texas History Tour - Texas Independence - Washington on the Brazos

 Because of all the construction on I35, it was recommended to us to travel across Central TX and use I45 instead.  So, on our trip down to San Antonio, we went north of College Station.  We decided on the way home, to go south of BCS and stop at one last history spot - Washington on the Brazos, where Texas Independence was declared.  (It's was also a nice distance from Goliad and a great stopping point for lunch) The original monument next to Independence Hall This state historic site also incorporates the etched windows.  Probably because of all the trees, these etched windows are easier to see.  We walked down the side streets of town and went down to the Brazos River.  There were lots of pretty flowers and some wild grapes along the trail. Texas History Tour - Spanish influence - Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo

 After a late lunch, we decided to visit the middle mission - San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo .  It was the largest mission and the one that is most well preserved, being designed a work area for the WPA in the 1930's.  They have done a wonderful job of recreating ruins and painting original colors.  There were also some architecture dig sites this summer.  Unfortunately, being a Sunday, we didn't get to meet any of the student workers.  We did however, get to visit with the park rangers, who had just recently returned to work and the park store was open as well. Mission San Jose was founded in 1720 along the San Antonio River.  It came to be the largest mission on the area with roughly 300 Indians living on the grounds.   "it's a giant turtle with a hole in the back" It's really an outdoor oven. Weekly Journal - week 4

In my life this week... It's been a different sort of a week.  The weather has been nice and so we've spent alot of time outside and with the windows open.  It's also been a week of reprimands.  Everything this week has set someone off - be it birthday parties, homeschooling, weight loss, diabetes, vacation plans, job choices and locations, attending worship services, or disciplining our children.  What has been accomplished this week?  The car is now in tip top shape again.  Craig changed all the spark plugs several months ago and our check engine light kept coming back.  Finally visited the dealer and they fixed it with a $2.00 part.  I was very afraid it was going to be so much more.  We also have 2 new tires on the the front.  Now, just need that oil change and we'll be good to go for our next adventure!
