January and February Activities

We had a variety of things going on as we try to get back to normal. This winter has been fairly warm (almost normal) for our area and so we were able to use our time off school for field trips, family trips to show off N, and lots of Dr visits. We also had a birthday for H!

N's 1st Sunday morning worship service - January 1st. Great way to start a new year!

Heard Museum, McKinney

Playing on the playground in the picnic area. Craig was able to come with us too and was the only one brave enough to stand near the 1st dinosaur. The dinosaurs move and make noise - a little scary the 1st time you see/hear them.

Several dinosaurs down the line, Craig was able to finally get 3 of them to pose with him for a picture. There was a photo op spot along the path. Yes, this picture looks a little strange - the background doesn't extend across the whole dinosaur so it looks like 2 pictures in one.

This dinosaur spit water - a very cool feature, if it wasn't the middle of winter because even at 70 degrees, spraying water is cold! A very good picture of a pretty little girl!

This raccoon is the same one on H's shirt. I think the saying applies to both!

Rapunzel 3rd Birthday!!!!!

We had H's 3rd birthday in January! Wow, where has the time gone? She requested a Rapunzel birthday so we created a tower and used Christmas presents as the decor. We also pulled out the mini frying pans for ice cream and set up my chocolate fountain to see how it worked.

Gracious Girls - First aid Unit

We made dr/nurse cookies and heart cookies for our snacks after our visit with our neighbor, an EMT, with the local hospital. The girls put bandaids, bandages, and assorted other things on their stuffed animals. Lots of fun amid a little learning. (And yes, little brothers are welcome too!)

Texas History Tour - Texas Independence - Washington on the Brazos

Because of all the construction on I35, it was recommended to us to travel across Central TX and use I45 instead. So, on our trip down to San Antonio, we went north of College Station. We decided on the way home, to go south of BCS and stop at one last history spot - Washington on the Brazos, where Texas Independence was declared. (It's was also a nice distance from Goliad and a great stopping point for lunch) The original monument next to Independence Hall This state historic site also incorporates the etched windows. Probably because of all the trees, these etched windows are easier to see. We walked down the side streets of town and went down to the Brazos River. There were lots of pretty flowers and some wild grapes along the trail. Texas History Tour - Spanish influence - Mission Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga

On the grounds of Goliad State Park is Mission Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga o. For this visit and our visit to Presidio la Bahia, we deviated from normal Texas afternoon behavior and visited both - in the heat! Why? Because mosquitoes aren't as numerous in the heat of the afternoon! Mission Espiritu Santo was where the CCC applied all they learned at the visitors center across the road. Most of the buildings have been restored/reconstructed and several are used as museums. The brickwork that we saw from the visitors center and many samples of the colors they re-created. Spanish culture was very vibrant! We also saw many examples of geometric shapes - shaped windows, rolled arches, built-in wall basins with rounded fronts. "Pirates lived here!" ~ R This mission had many textile operations here - weaving, dying, basket making.... Looks like the window seat we saw at the visitors center. This appears to be ruins of a building....

Texas History Tour - El Camino Real del los Tejas Visitors Center

On the grounds of the state park is the El Camino Real Visitors Center. It showcases part of the El Camino Real, the Kings Highway between San Antonio and Nacogdoches. The most interesting part of this building - it was used as a practice building by the CCC for learning techniques to be used in restoration of Mission Espiritu Santo. We found architecture details, arches, plastering techniques, and architectural drawings. The details in this building are amazing. Very colorful and decorative! Build in cabinets and hand made hinges and clasps. Amazing!! S got a hold of the camera and decided we needed a picture of everyone. We were visiting the courtyard and admiring the gardens and the beautifully carved gates. Drainage here and at all the missions is fantastic. The metal work and the ingenuity of the workers is amazing! This staircase is amazing! It leads to no where, just another practice piece.
